What Makes the Moon a Supermoon?

Unless you have been on the moon, you have most likely heard all the recent discussion about the current supermoon, when the moon is in its most brilliant stage.

However, what is a supermoon? A supermoon is when two different lunar stages coincide. First, the moon is in its full or new phase, and it is much closer to the Earth than it is during regular rotation.

This event makes the moon look 14% larger and 30% brighter than the moon when it is at its furthest point. Rather than having to call this lunar event by the name given it by astronomers, perigee-syzygy, the term Supermoon was coined in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle.

A rare event

A Supermoon is a unique event in astrology since the last time the moon was this close to the Earth was January 26, 1948. The next time the moon is expected to be this close again isn’t until November 25, 2034.

This means that the current Supermoon is the closest and most significant in a period of 86 years.

Noticeable changes in the Earth and humans during a Supermoon

Rather than just being another breathtaking astrological display for your enjoyment, there are significant and noticeable changes to the Earth and us humans while a Supermoon is present.

The Supermoon’s control over the Earth

As you are aware, the moon holds significant power over the Earth, especially when it comes to the ocean’s tides. When there is a supermoon present, the tidal forces increase, usually up to 18% greater than they are during a regular moon.

An increase in other natural events have also been documented; these are caused by the increased gravitational pull of a supermoon. In the past, events including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and other severe weather events took place within a week of a supermoon.

Most recently, in 2011, there was the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand and, in 2005 Hurricane Katrina occurred in New Orleans.

The Supermoon’s control over you

A supermoon is a supercharged Full Moon, astrologically speaking.

The moon is associated with your emotions. Keeping this in mind, during a supermoon, you can expect to be more emotional than rational. Your laughter and tears will come

easier, you will suffer extreme mood swings, with supercharged drama, both good and bad, you may also experience more energy than usual.

The lunar effect

The lunar effect, or the lunar theory, is the idea that there is a connection between the cycles of the moon and human behavior. Many people dismiss these concerns. However, there is scientific data that proves there is a connection between the moon’s cycles and unusual human behavior.

The moon is blamed for some cases of mental instability

The words lunacy and lunatic both stem from “Luna” the Latin word for the moon. It is believed people are much more likely to exhibit unusual and erratic behavior during a full moon, or especially a Supermoon.

A study published in the National Criminal Justice Reference Service, titled Lunar Effect – Biological Tides and Human Emotions contained extensive analyses of data on human behavior in correlation to the moon.

The study that lunar astronomy has correctly proven that the repression of the moon’s gravitational influence brings on social tension, disharmony and bizarre results.

Another study conducted in Florida, collected over a 5-year period, showed an increase in cases involving violent actions like homicide and aggravated assault increased around the time of a full moon.

Since the supermoon is a supercharged full moon, you can expect all of these actions to increase. So even though the moon is beautiful in all its glory, it also has a dark side.

Just Remember

Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright. Curt Siodmak
