Do Health and Nutrition Supplements Help or Harm Our Bodies?

download

Nutritional supplements, or as they are more commonly known, dietary supplements are intended to provide a person with the nutrients that may otherwise not be consumed during your regular meals.

In the United States, there are currently more than 50,000 dietary supplements on the market. Nutritional supplements are consumed by more than half of the adults in the United States. Multivitamins are the most common of these dietary supplements consumed.

Legitimate Health Benefits

Nutritional supplements are not intended to treat or prevent any specific disease. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, in some circumstances, they can be dangerous.

Most supplements should be avoided, and in most cases, people shouldn’t consume micro-nutrients except those with clearly proven deficiencies. These people should always consult with a doctor first.

Definition

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), dietary supplements are products which are not pharmaceutical drugs, food additives like spices or preservatives, or conventional food, which also meet any of these criteria.

  • The product is intended to supplement a person’s diet, despite it not being used as a meal replacement.
  • The product is or contains a vitamindietary element, herb used for herbalism or botanical used as a medicinal plantamino acid, any substance which contributes to other food eaten, or any concentratemetaboliteingredientextract, or combination of these things.
  • The product is labeled as a dietary supplement.

Medical Uses

Dietary supplements are used to make sure a person is receiving enough essential nutrients. They aren’t necessary to take if you are eating healthy balanced meals on regular bases.

There are several different ways nutritional supplements can cause harm to a person, including taking too much of a specific vitamin or mineral. This is especially true in the case of vitamins and minerals that tend to build up in the body.

Always check with your doctor before taking any dietary supplement, to make sure they will be helpful to your body, rather than harmful.

    1. That is so true, isn’t it? I have heard so many negative things about these Nutritional Supplements since I was asked to write that piece I’m almost of the feeling anymore, get the nutrition your body requires from a natural source rather than all these pills.

  1. When I was getting my medical training, it really hit me when the professor said “they’re called SUPPLEMENTS, not replacements.” They should be used for people who are eating appropriately and still can’t maintain correct levels.I thoroughly agree that we should get our nutrients from the natural source, but thank god there are supplements for those who need them. Great piece – I really enjoy your blog!

    1. Kate (and the kids), thank you so much for taking the time to read my article and to join the discussion. Also, I really appreciate your input it will help a lot of people, yours truly for one. I always thought supplements meant you can take them in place of eating nutritious foods. For instance for people on the go or like me people who never eat right. I bet many of our readers have thought the same so your comment will help a lot of our friends out there.

You say your medical training, are you a doctor or in the medical field? I can’t tell you how glad I am that you left this comment one of my main reasons for this blog is to inform people about important issues. I really appreciate it and look forward to your input in the future. Say hi to the kids!
